EMILIE

“You good with your lemons?” Adrienne asks, as I lick lemon juice from my finger.

“Yep. Want some?” I ask, handing her a slice dipped in sugar.

“No thanks,” she says with a laugh.

Nathalia looks at me funny. “Lemons dipped in sugar?”

I shrug. “I had a weird craving.”

“Okay, so what are we watching first?” Adrienne asks as she scrolls through the movies on Netflix.

“Well, this is technically the beginning of your bachelorette weekend, so you choose,” Nathalia says.

“Maybe wedding themed movies?” I suggest. “My Best Friend’s Wedding, Runaway Bride, 27 Dresses, Bridesmaids, Bride Wars.”

“Okay, okay. Let’s go with…” she taps her nail on her bottom lip. “Bride Wars. I love that movie.”

We settle in, all three of us sitting on the cream-colored couch that stretches in front of a huge seventy-five-inch TV. We laugh at their on-screen antics, and we talk about how much of a douche Chris Pratt is in the movie, and we lose our minds when we realize Kev from Shameless is the one marrying Kate Hudson.

“He looks so different! Look at that baby face,” I say, pointing at the TV.

When that movie ends, we take an intermission and get more snacks.

“I’m gonna make some popcorn,” I say, getting up to go to the kitchen. “Y’all want? Side note, I am adding Lawry’s salt to it.”

Nathalia scrunches her face up. “What?”

“It’s good! You can try some.”

Adrienne just shakes her head. “I’m good. I’m gonna get some chips and dip.”

“So, how’s everything going?” Thalia asks Adrienne. “You ready for the big day?”

Adrienne pushes her curls behind her shoulder. “Ugh. I think so.” She pauses and giggles. “I mean, I am ready to get married. I couldn’t be more excited about that. I just mean I’m stressing myself to death over every little detail, and thinking about the worst things that could go wrong.”

“I’m sure everything will be fine.”

“If you keep eating all this junk food, you probably won’t fit into your dress,” I tease.

“Shut up!” she says with a laugh, taking a swipe at my shoulder. “I just want everything to be perfect.” She takes a deep breath, her shoulders rising and falling with the action. “Jace hasn’t heard from his mom, and I can tell it’s affecting him.”

“That’s shitty. Have you tried calling her from a different number? You know, just in case she doesn’t want to answer a call from him,” Thalia says.

“We have. I’ve called from my phone, and from work, as well as at his office. She isn’t answering.”

“Maybe you’ll hear from her soon,” I offer, knowing there’s nothing else I can say to help.

Adrienne shrugs before grabbing her chips and dip, and plopping back down on the couch. “So, how have things been with you, Thalia? Work keeping you busy?”

“Things have been great,” she answers, beaming. “Everything is really good. Work is work,” she gives a one shoulder shrug, “but life is good.”

Me and Adrienne look at each other before looking back at Thalia who seems unable to keep a smile from her face.

“What’s goin’ on with you?” I ask, shoving some popcorn into my mouth.
